Fantasy Six Nations 2022 Preview – Scotland

With Saturday 5th February 2022 fast approaching, it’s time to delve a bit deeper into this year’s potential fantasy Six Nations stars. So over the next two weeks FRG is providing a quick preview of all the teams from a fantasy perspective. Today we look at England…

Scotland

In a nutshell

Scotland can look back on 2021 as a successful year, with tremendous growth on the field, with some huge wins (away victories against England and France) and a strong finish in the Six Nations, and also the global emergence of some significant new talents in Hamish Watson and Duhan Van Der Merwe, and the blooding of new talents in the form of Ewan Ashman, Kyle Steyn and Rufus McLean

Duhan van der Merwe in particular made an outstanding impact from a fantasy perspective, ending up as the 2021 Six Nations Championship’s top try-scorer with five. He now has nine tries in 13 Tests for Scotland and is a truly lethal threat whenever he has the ball. Finn Russell remains a dynamic, creative and unpredictable threat, with the added bonus of kicking points since Greig Laidlaw’s international retirement. Stuart Hogg remains his irrepressible self, becoming Scotland’s all-time record try scorer. Hamish Watson became a key figurehead throughout the year. Named as the Guinness Six Nations Player of the Championship, he scored one try and provided one try assist, carried for 321 metres, and completed every single tackle of his 55 in defence. Finally during the summer, both Kyle Steyn and Rufus McLean both shone on debuts and demonstrated Scotland’s back line depth.

Despite this tremendous uptick, Scotland look to face an extremely challenging Six Nations, while their name may not be the one being engraved on the trophy come the tournament conclusion, they will no doubt heavily influence who’s name will be engraved.
