…for the second year in a row, the man in top spot is Roy Robertson. We had the pleasure of getting in touch with Roy, who gave us some insight into what it takes to beat thousands of other avid fantasy rugby experts and take top spot, as the competition came to it’s close…
FRG: Are you a regular fantasy rugby player?
Roy: Yes I am. This is my second year being the overall top manger in FRD
FRG: Did you have a strategy when you drafted your team or was it more a case of going with your gut feeling with the players available?
Roy: Yes, naturally everyone has a plan. However that plan never ever works, so you end up playing from your gut. Which I believe is better anyway.
FRG: What was your best moment of the season in context of the fantasy game?
Roy: Hands down that try Mafi scored against the Waratahs! Almost jumped through the ceiling at 7AM, my girlfriend thought the house was on fire!
FRG: Who was your best performing player of the season?
Roy: Well its a toss up between the Reds Front Row and Solomon Alaimalo when he plays 11.
FRG: What was your best waiver/free agent pick up for your fantasy team this year?
Roy: TJ Perenara. My fellow managers didn’t have the patience to hold him through injury.
FRG: If there’s one single tip that you’d give to a new Fantasy Rugby Draft manager, what would it be?
Roy: Join a league with mates! Its the best way for guys to stay in touch and keep an interest in each others lives. The winning is subsequent for me. The true prize for me is the time you get with your mates, it is truly special. Public leagues and prize leagues are a pain and become a chore after the first few weeks.
FRG: What players will you be keeping an eye on in the early rounds of next season’s draft?
Roy: That is a bit of a personal question. Hahaha. FRG: I had to try!
FRG: Did you use any specific websites or resources to help your team planning?
Roy: I find the websites available for Super Rugby news are poor. I think this general lack of info is a serious issue for Super Rugby. Even for none fantasy league players. That said there are a few guys keeping their eyes on specific teams, like Hamish Bidwell on the Canes and Paul Tait in Argentina. Fantasy XV casualty ward is a great tool to keep tabs on injured players. Otherwise Twitter trawling is your only hope.
