Welcome to Day 16 of FRG’s Fantasy Rugby World Cup Diary! A daily post during the World Cup in which I will be previewing the upcoming games, looking back at the previous matches and sharing the progress, trials and tribulations of all my teams across the 4 games live for the World Cup…
Match Day 15 Review
First up today was, on paper at least, the biggest mismatch of the tournament with the lowest ranked team in the tournament, Namibia, taking on the reigning champions New Zealand. Namibia put up a great fight in the impossible task and at some stages in the first half, made it extremely hard for the All Blacks, keeping the score within a point for the vast majority of the first half. The All Blacks made their class show in the second half, eventually running in 11 tries over the course of the game to win 71-9. There were big points scorers across the field but the 3 biggest scorers were Anton Lienart-Brown, Ben Smith and Sevu Reece. Special mention also goes to TJ Perenara who came on for the final 15 minutes and bagged an assist and possibly the try of the tournament.
Second up was a closer affair between France and Tonga. France ground out a tough victory 23-21, with big scoring performances from Virimi Vakatawa, Alivereti Raka, Charles Ollivon, Tane Takulua, Malietoa Hingano and Zane Kapeli.
No games tomorrow, so all eyes now move to Tuesday’s game where South Africa face Canada.
FRG’s Teams
The Rugby Magazine – Points: 1532 – Ranking: 158
A good day with captain Ardie Savea and my kicker Jordie Barrett both scoring well. Onwards to Tuesday when I’ll have Malcolm Marx, Tyler Ardon and Elton Jantjies in action.
SuperBru – Points: 713 – Ranking: 369
Two players in action today with Ardie Savea and TJ Perenara both bumping up their scores very nicely. A new match round starts on Tuesday so I’ll be updating my team tomorrow.
The Daily Telegraph – Points: 1308 Ranking: 61
A great return in the NZ-Nambia game with captain Reece, Ben Smith, Ardie Savea and TJ Perenara. George Bridge disappointing to not come away with any tries. Even more disappointing was the performance of Damian Penaud against Tonga. Now with 7 transfers left I’ll be using them sparingly. Thinking of making a change for the South Africa v Canada game, Cobus perhaps…
The Irish Times – Points: 1093 – Ranking: 41
A good jump up the rankings today with a great performance from Captain Sevu Reece and Ardie Savea. Onwards to Tuesday when I’ll have Malcolm Marx and Siya Kolisi in action.
