FRG’s Fantasy Rugby World Cup Diary – 24th September

Welcome to Day 5 of FRG’s Fantasy Rugby World Cup Diary! A daily post during the World Cup in which I will be previewing the upcoming games, looking back at the previous matches and sharing the progress, trials and tribulations of all my teams across the 4 games live for the World Cup…

Match Day 5 Review

World number 16, Samoa, faced World number 20, Russia, today in Saitama, and the fresh Samoa, put the ailing Russia side to the sword in a strong second half performance, with a 34-9 victory. In terms of standout performances, it was a tale of two wingers, Alapati Leiua and Ed Fidow. Fidow got 2 tries, carried for 96 metres, made 2 clean breaks and beat 9 defenders, while the outstanding Leiua also got 2 tries and carried for 163m, made 3 clean breaks and beat 10 defenders.

Match Day 6 Preview

One game tomorrow in which we will see Uruguay make their tournament bow against Fiji. Despite Fiji having a short turnaround between games and Uruguay being fully fresh, not many are giving Uruguay any chance, and the bookies are projecting a 31 point victory for Fiji. Players to look at include Premiership favourite Vereniki Goneva, Felipo Nakosi, Semi Radradra and Leone Nakarawa, who lines up in the back row at Number 8.

FRG’s Teams

The Rugby Magazine – Points: 545 – Ranking: 209

Following the England team announcement today and the dropping of Jonny May, I made one shuffle, bringing in Nanai-Williams off my bench. I’ll be waiting for the South Africa team announcement before making any more changes. I have 29 players in my squad, so I have some more room for some free additions. With Nanai-Williams and Vui playing today I had a solid if unspectacular day getting 57 points between the two of them…

SuperBru – Points: 196.5 – Ranking: TBC

Nobody in my team played today so all focus is on tomorrow with Radradra and Nakarawa up against Uruguay.

The Daily Telegraph – Points: 562 – Ranking: 418

I had one player out there today, Ed Fidow, but he had a cracking two try appearance and racked up 32 points, not too shabby.

In preparation for tomorrow I’ve made two subs, Ed Fidow out for Vereniki Goneva and Joanthan Davies out for Semi Radradra, I also have Leone Nakarawa playing, so will have some good Fiji coverage against the Uruguayans

The Irish Times – Points: 263 – Ranking: 4533

Nobody in my Irish Times team played today, and following the England team announcement my double week captain it seems that Jonny May will not be gaining any further points for me (and Owen Farrell will be starting on the bench) this match round. What’s that they say about no plan surviving first contact?! I’ll be pinning my hopes on Semi Radradra and Leone Nakarawa to improve the situation!
