Welcome to Day 26 of the FRG RWC Diary! This is a daily post during the World Cup in which I will be previewing the upcoming games, looking back at the previous matches and sharing the progress, trials and tribulations of all my teams across the 4 games live for the World Cup. This will be the last post for a few days but I’ll be back again on Thursday with the Quarter-Final picks and then the Diary posts will start again on Friday (along with the Premiership Round 1 picks!)…
Match Day 22 Review
Today saw the Quarter-Finals conclude with France v Wales and South Africa v Japan.
The closest of this year’s quarter-finals saw France implode against Wales. Farnce were cruising in the first half but a mindless cheap shot from Sebastian Vaahamihina saw France reduced to 14 men and eventually saw Wales grind out a 20-19 victory. It wasn’t the highest scoring match from a fantasy perspective, but standing out from the rest was Virimi Vakatawa, Aaron Wainwright, Ross Moriarty and Jefferson Poirot.
In the second match, the Japanese dream ended with a clinical and professional performance from the Springboks. South Africa ended up 26-3 victors with a star performance from the two try Makazole Mapimpi, as well as great fantasy scores from Faf De Klerk and Handre Pollard.
FRG’s Teams
The Rugby Magazine – Points: 2633 – Ranking: 86
It was a disappointing day for all four of my teams, but one of the biggest drops was in The Rugby Magazine, where I slipped down to 86th. Quiet performances from Gareth Davies, Cheslin Kolbe, Bongi, PSDT and Handre Pollard resulted in a low score (although credit to Lood De Jager with an excellent 34). Onwards to the semis, my aim is to end the tournament in the Top 50.
SuperBru – Points: 1,024.5 – Ranking: 507
The biggest drop of all my teams, down to 507. An uncharacteristically quiet performance from Cheslin Kolbe, Josh Adams and Gareth Davies hit me hard and the Jonathan Davies droput was the final straw. I’d now be delighted if I can get back to the Top 100.
The Daily Telegraph – Points: 1947 – Ranking: 25
Slipping down one place on the day I had marked for a big charge. My hopes to reach the top some completely dashed with a 200+ point gap still remaining and the majority of my transfers gone. If I can stay in the Top 50 I’ll be happy and will consider that a job well done. 6 transfers left in the tournament…
The Irish Times – Points: 1684 – Ranking: 38
Still my best hope of winning a game with 129 points off the top spot and a strong looking side, I’m positive that there are still opportunities to make a march up the table….
